Gillespie Captures School Record Time at Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational

NEWTON, N.C. – Freshman Keely Gillespie captured the best time in school history in finishing third individually at the 2010 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational on Saturday morning at Southside Park.

A native of North Augusta, S.C, Gillespie finished with a time of 19:34.8 in the 5K meet. Gillespie's time bested Nicole Maitland's (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) time of 19:47 that she acquired en route to winning the 2008 Blue Hose Invitational on the campus of Presbyterian College.

USC Aiken's Days Inn Downtown Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of September, Gillespie's third place finish on Saturday matches her best finish so far in 2010 as she also finished third in the Division II portion of the 2010 Gamecock Invitational. She concluded the inaugural Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational on Sept. 25 in fourth individually.

The North Augusta High School product has been the top finisher in all of USC Aiken's five meets in 2010. She has now collected three of the top six times in school history.

Julia Van Vollenhoven (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) and Maitland helped the Pacers have three runners in the top 25 individually in the 2010 Lenoir-Rhyne Invitational. Van Vollenhoven finished one spot ahead of Maitland in 24th with a time of 20:53.2. Maitland finished 25th with a time of 20:56.9.

USC Aiken ended Saturday's event in sixth place as a team with a total team time of 1:46:55.00.

Host Lenoir-Rhyne claimed the team title in the event with a total team time of 1:39:39.80.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Kate Griewisch was the top individual finisher, coming in with a time of 18:24.4. She came in a full minute ahead of second place finisher Cassie Adamson (19:30.5) of Mars Hill.

USC Aiken will next run in the Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championship on Saturday, Nov. 6. The meet is part of the PBC's Fall Festival at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
