Gillespie Guides Pacers to Second Place Finish at Gamecock Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. – In her first career collegiate meet, USC Aiken freshman Keely Gillespie finished third to help lead the USC Aiken women’s cross country team to a second place finish among the Division II participants in the 5K Gamecock Invitational at Hilton Fields in Fort Jackson on Friday evening.
Gillespie (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) posted a time of 20:01.57 to finish third in the Division II portion of the 2010 Gamecock Invitational. Gillespie’s time is the third best in school history.
The school record holder for the best time at 19:47, senior Nicole Maitland (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) finished in the top eight in the Division II results of the Gamecock Invitational. The three-time All-Peach Belt Conference performer garnered a time of 21:10.79.
Pacer freshmen Julia Van Vollenhoven (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) and Allison Amick (Columbia, S.C./Ben Lippen) were not far behind Maitland. Van Vollenhoven finished in 10th with a time of 22:09.69, while Amick was in 11th with a time of 22:25.42.
Savannah College of Art & Design claimed the top honors as a team in the Division II results with a total time of 1:41.59.53. The Pacers’ second place finish saw them record a total time of 1:48:43.48. USC Beaufort finished in third in the Division II portion of the event with a total team time of 1:50:26.37.
Hannah Lieberman of Savannah College of Art & Design was the top individual finisher in the Division II results with a time of 19:09.89. The time bested teammate Sarah Caskey, who finished just ahead of the Pacers’ Gillespie in second with a time of 19:32.67.
Clemson claimed the team crown in the Division I results with a total team time of 1:32.50.99. South Carolina’s Beatrice Biwott was the top individual Division I finisher with a time of 17:58.70.
USC Aiken will next run in the Berry College Invitational in Rome, Ga. on Saturday, Sept. 11. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 9 a.m.
