Pacers Finish Second at Inaugural Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational
AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken Women's Cross Country team finished second as a team at the Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.
The 2010 Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational served as USC Aiken's first full meet at USC Aiken's top-of-the-line home course, Pacer Path.
The Bridgestone-Pacer Invitational featured four different divisions with a men's collegiate 8K race and a women's collegiate 5K race. There were also 5K high school varsity girls and boys races on Saturday.
The Pacers finished in second as a team in the 5K women's collegiate race with a cumulative time of 1:50:56.05. The time was just short of first place finisher Clayton State, who ended its efforts on Saturday morning with a time of 1:44:52.60 as a team.
Two Pacers finished in the top eight in USC Aiken's first ever home cross country event with freshman Keely Gillespie (North Augusta, S.C./North Augusta) finishing fourth individually and Nicole Maitland (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) ending the race in eighth place.
Gillespie came in with a time of 20:52.39, while Maitland was just behind at 21:24.60.
Clayton State had the top three individual finishers with Samantha Walling collecting first place honors with a time of 19:45.34.
Clayton State also picked up top honors in the men's 8K collegiate race with a cumulative team time of 2:20:08.17. Clayton State's Fidelis Mutiso (26:39.90) was the top individual finisher.
In the girls 5K high school race, South Aiken obtained top honors as a team with a total team time of 2:03:12.53. Airport High School's Megan Stahlberger was the top individual finisher with a time of 20:29.59.
In the boys high school 5K race, Aiken High School's Sam McGill claimed top individual honors with a time of 17:48.24. South Aiken as a team also acquired the team title in the boys 5K race with a total team time of 1:34:11.53.
USC Aiken will next run in the Jaguar Invitational in Augusta, Ga. on Oct. 9, 2010. The meet is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m.
