Pacers Finish Eighth at PBC Cross Country Championship
LUMBERTON, N.C. - Nicole Maitland finished in 11th place individually and the University of South Carolina Aiken women's cross country team concluded the 6K 2009 Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championship in eighth place on Saturday morning at Luther Britt Park.
Maitland (Chapin, S.C./Chapin) ended her efforts on Saturday
morning with a time of 24:20.34 to finish in 11th. The
11th place finish by the junior leaves her as a
three-time all-conference performer.
USC Aiken's Jani Linde (Columbia, S.C./Dublin Coffman) had her top
10 streak finish end in the PBC Championship. Linde had entered the
championship having finished in the top 10 in every Pacer event in
2009, but she finished the 2009 PBC Championship in 18th
place with a time of 24:51.73.
The Pacers concluded their efforts with a team time average of 27:30.89 to finish eighth as a team.
Columbus State won their fifth consecutive title in the event with a team time average of 23:38.65. The five straight league crowns in a row is second-best to Kennesaw State, which claimed seven in a row from 1994-2000.
Columbus State had the top two individual finishers in the event with Naomi Tanui claiming top honors with a time of 22:26.71.
The 19th Annual Peach Belt Conference Cross Country Championship was the first of the PBC-GEICO Championship Series and it brought together the largest field for a cross country championship the PBC has had since 2003. The women's race was changed from a 5k to a 6k run to mirror the length of the NCAA regional race in two weeks.
