Pacers Tabbed Fourth in PBC Preseason Volleyball Poll

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken volleyball team was chosen to finish fourth in the Peach Belt Conference preseason volleyball coaches poll released by the league office on Friday, Aug. 26, 2011.

The past three years under head coach Glenn Cox can be described as a youth movement. Entering his fourth season in charge of Pacer volleyball, Cox believes that the solid foundation that has been built is going to pay off in the near future.

Extremely young last season, USC Aiken concluded its 2010 campaign with an overall record of 15-16, while going 6-8 in Peach Belt Conference action. The Pacers took on some of the toughest competition in all of NCAA Division II and NAIA volleyball over the course of the 2010 season, making the most out of many of their matches by going the maximum five sets in 13 of those matches.

USC Aiken cruised through the majority of their season in third place in the extremely tough Peach Belt Conference after being projected to finish in a tie for fifth place. The Pacers even made an appearance in the second region rankings of the year as the 10th-ranked team in the Southeast Region.

USC Aiken commences the 2011 campaign with 13 letterwinners returning, including five starters. Despite seven upperclassmen, USC Aiken still begins the upcoming year with a great deal of youth with 10 underclassmen.

The Pacer volleyball team will open the 2011 season by participating in the first of two regular season tournaments at Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Ga. The Pacers will have four matches in the event that will take place on Friday, Sept. 2 and Saturday, Sept. 3.

USC Aiken will open its 2011 season on Friday, Sept. 2 at 12 p.m. against Alabama-Huntsville. Later that day at 4:30 p.m., USC Aiken will square off with Lincoln Memorial.

On Saturday, Sept. 3, USC Aiken will face off against Catawba at 12:30 p.m. The Pacers will close out the tournament with a 4 p.m. match against Lenoir-Rhyne.

The Pacers will host the annual USC Aiken Volleyball Invitational at the Convocation Center on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10. The tournament will feature 12 of the best volleyball teams in NCAA Division II in USC Aiken, Augusta State, Armstrong Atlantic State, Flagler, Anderson, Newberry, Pfeiffer, Wheeling Jesuit, Lynn, Coker, Florida Tech and Barton.

The Flagler Saints have been tabbed as the preseason favorite in the Peach Belt Conference for the second consecutive year. Armstrong Atlantic State is second in the preseason tally, while Montevallo was picked third.
