USC Aiken Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams Open Fall Campaign Strongly

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In both teams first outside action of the 2009 fall season, the USC Aiken men's and women's tennis teams made a strong showing on the first day of the USC Upstate Fall Classic at the USC Upstate Tennis Complex on Friday.

In the men's "A" singles draw, USC Aiken's Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell 7-5, 6-2 to Edgar Rodriquez, who was playing unattached in the event. The loss dropped Andrade into the quarterfinals of the men's "A" singles consolation section where he bested Presbyterian College's Michael Nicol, 6-3, 6-2 to stay alive in the event.

Andrade will next take on Furman's Watson, who bested Wofford's Stuart Robertson in the quarterfinals of the men's "A" singles consolation round. Andrade and Watson will square off in the semifinals at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

In the main section of the men's "B" draw, USC Aiken's Juan Guglielmeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina) downed PC's Andrew Brigham in the first round to advance to the section quarterfinals where he fell to unattached Renzo Airaldi, 6-4, 6-1.

In the same section, USC Aiken freshman Ben Klaas (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) bested Wofford's Tom Wood (6-2, 6-2) in his opener to move on to the quarterfinals where he eventually fell to Wofford's Alan Donald.

In the men's "C" draw, USC Aiken's Nathan Berlyn (Sydney, Australia) beat PC's James Zaher, 6-2, 6-2, to move to the quarterfinals against Clemson's Maritz Dettinger. Berlyn would battle Dettinger, to a 6-1, 7-6 (4) loss.

USC Aiken freshman Niclas Markiewicz (Liege, Belgium) would move to the quarterfinals of the "C" draw with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Wofford's Ryan Byrne in the first round. Markiewicz would then advance to the "C" draw semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wofford's Elliot Farmer.

In doubles, the Pacer tandem of Andrade and Garcia fell 8-3 to the Wofford duo of Donald and Bartholomy. USC Aiken's doubles team of Klaas and Guglielmeti fell in their match to the unattached tandem of Roux/Rodriquez, 8-0 to end their title aspirations.

On the women's side, USC Aiken's Mathilde Grenet (Doumont, France) began her time at the USC Upstate Fall Classic with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over PC's Virginia Waldron in the first round of the women's "B" draw. Grenet would advance no further though with USC Upstate's Emilia Milavanovic downing Grenet 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the draw.

Fellow Pacer Stephanie Humphrey (Harpendon, England) also advanced out of the first round of the "B" draw with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Appalachian State's Heather Prior. Humphrey would lose to PC's Megan Davis in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2.

In the women's "C" draw, USC Aiken's Courtney Hall (Watkinsville, Ga.) and Melanie Schneider (Gensingen, Germany) both fell into the consolation bracket of the draw with losses in the first round, while Sole Angel (Rosario, Argentina) moved into the quarterfinals of the "C" draw with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Upstate's Katherine Estupinan in the first round. Angel fell to Wofford's Stephanie Cox in the quarterfinals (6-0, 6-3).

USC Aiken's Brittany Telford (Newmarket, Canada) is still alive in the "C" draw after moving past Appalachian State's Lauren Coffey (6-3, 6-1) in the first round and PC's Margaux Melby 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals of the draw.

Telford will face Charleston Southern's Angie Torres at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning in the semifinals of the "C" draw.

In doubles, USC Aiken's tandem of Grenet and Telford are still alive after victories in the first round and quarterfinals. The duo will take on PC's doubles team of Davis and Oelke on Saturday morning.
