Bearcats Narrowly Escape Pacers
AIKEN, S.C. – The
USC Aiken men’s and women’s tennis teams both dropped
heartbreaking 5-4 decisions to Peach Belt Conference foe Lander on
Wednesday afternoon at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
The 17th-ranked Pacer men took two of the three doubles matches to
enter singles with a 2-1 lead, but the Pacers were only able to lay
claim to two of the six singles tilts to leave the 14th-ranked
Bearcats with the narrow 5-4 victory.
The loss drops the Pacer men back to .500 on the 2010 campaign at
7-7. The Pacers are now 1-5 in the Peach Belt Conference. Lander
improved to 12-1 overall. The Bearcats currently own a perfect mark
of 4-0 in the PBC.
The USC Aiken women went down to the wire with Lander. Nearly six
hours after the afternoon had began and the score even at 4-4, USC
Aiken’s Ida Sandberg and Lander’s Melanise Newbold
battled into the third set for the win at No. 6 singles and the
overall victory. Newbold was able to hold on barely for a 6-4, 3-6,
7-5 win that earned the 35th-ranked Bearcats the narrow 5-4 win
over the Pacers.
The USC Aiken women after the loss are now 6-8 on the 2010 season.
The Pacers enter their next match with a 2-6 mark in the PBC.
Lander improved to 10-4 overall (4-3 PBC) with the victory over the
Pacers.
The USC Aiken men will next play host to NCAA Division III power
Emory at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 26 before the USC Aiken men and
women close out the week with two home conference matches at the
USC Aiken Tennis Complex.
The Pacers will first play host to Columbus State at 2:30 p.m. on
Saturday, March 27 before closing the week by hosting Georgia
Southwestern at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 28.
