Mens Tennis Stuns No. 6 Hawaii Pacific as Women Get Shut Out
AIKEN, SC - The No. 10 USC Aiken men's
tennis team shocked No. 6 Hawaii Pacific as the Pacers came away
with the close 5-4 victory. The women's team was shutout by the No.
18 Sea Warriors on Wednesday, April 1 at the USCA Tennis
Complex.
The men's team improves to 12-3 on the season and 7-3 against
nationally ranked teams as the women fall to 7-8 overall.
The Pacers were up 2-1 after the doubles matches as both duos that
won extended their win streak to five matches.
The No. 9 team of seniors Dagoberto Darezzo and Edward Horne go to
9-1 together on the season as the defeat HPU's Nikola Petrov and
Daniel Luedi by an 8-6 score. Fellow senior Chris Kaetz and his
partner freshman Andrade Gregory won by the same 8-6 score to push
their record to 10-4 on the season.
In singles, two matches went into a third set while two others
went to a tiebreaker to determine the winners.
No. 6 Bruno Seves defeated his opponent by 6-4, 6-2 scores at the
top spot. The senior goes to 12-2 on the season and extends his
winning streak to five.
At the second singles game, No. 19 Darezzo and HPU's No. 14
Hendrik Bode went back-and-forth going into a third set. Bode took
the first set by a 6-1 score before Darezzo came back from for the
next two by the same 6-3 scores. Darezzo wins his 12th match of the
season and his 52 as a Pacer, making him as the winningest men's
tennis player at USC Aiken.
Sophomore Filipe Garcia is still unbeaten at the four spot in the
lineup, as he defeated HPU's Anton Samuilau. Garcia goes to 11-4 on
the season, as he is 3-0 in this position.
On the women's side of things, the Pacers fought hard in doubles
as they came up with four games in two of the matches.
The teams of sophomore Stephanie Humphrey and junior Maria Soledad
Angel and sophomore Melanie Schnieder and junior Brittany Gore both
recorded four games in their matches.
In singles, junior Brittany Telford came close to stealing a match
away from Hawaii Pacific. She was defeated at the four spot by 6-1
and 7-5 scores.
In the other five singles matches, the Pacers came up with five
games.
The men's team will return to the courts on Saturday, April 4 with
they face ABAC in a non-conference matchup slated to start at 9:00
a.m. from the USCA Tennis Complex. Following the men, the women's
team will hit the courts as they will tangle with Savannah State
starting at 12:00 p.m.
