Kornegay Named Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year

FLORENCE, S.C. – University of South Carolina Aiken freshman softball pitcher India Kornegay was chosen Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday, April 14.

Kornegay (Eufaula, Ala./Eufaula) claimed the award at a banquet on the eve of the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Softball Championship at the Freedom Florence Complex.

She was also chosen to the 2011 Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Conference second team.

A three-time Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Week (Feb. 22, Mar. 8 and Mar. 28) as well as the Feb. 15 PBC Pitcher of the Week, Kornegay has entered USC Aiken’s record book in career strikeouts to sit fifth all-time with 192 strikeouts in just one season.

Her 192 retired batters is good enough for fourth-best in the league currently with 38 of those batters going down looking to leave her sixth in the conference in batters struck out looking.

She currently boasts a program-best 9.26 strikeouts per seven innings.

In 145.2 innings pitched this season, the freshman is boasting a team-best and Peach Belt Conference third-best 1.44 ERA while her opponents are batting a team second-best and league third-best .150 against her. She is 13-6 in the circle overall in 2011.

She has recorded seven shutout victories on the year including one no-hitter in the second game against St. Andrews on Mar. 23. She has two saves this season.

Kornegay and the Peach Belt Conference seventh-seeded Pacers are set to square off against national No. 22 and PBC No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic State in the first round of the 18th Annual Peach Belt Conference Softball Championship on Friday, April 15.

The 2011 league softball tournament is slated for Friday, April 15 through Sunday, April 17 at the Freedom Florence Complex in Florence, S.C. The Pacers and Pirates will be a part of Game 3 on Friday, April 15 with first pitch scheduled to leave the circle at 1:30 p.m.

The winner will advance to the quarterfinal round where they will face the winner of Game 4 between PBC No. 3 Columbus State and PBC No. 6 Georgia College which will be contested simultaneously as the Pacers and Pirates game at 1:30 p.m. The winners will play in the final game of Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Under the double-elimination rules of the tournament, the losing teams of Games 3 and 4 will also meet at 6:30 p.m. to battle for a chance to stay alive and make a run for the championship round to be contested on Sunday, April 17.

USC Aiken begins the league tournament with a 26-14 overall record and a 9-11 mark in league play.
