Three Pacers Chosen to All-PBC Softball Team
FLORENCE, S.C. - On the eve of the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Softball Championship, three University of South Carolina Aiken softball players were chosen to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference Softball Team at a banquet on Thursday evening.
USC Aiken senior pitcher Toni Flessate was chosen as an at-large member of the All-PBC first team, while junior Lauren Locklear was tabbed to the second team as an at-large representative. Both players received all-conference laurels for the second consecutive season.
Joining Flessate and Locklear on the All-PBC team was freshman Kelley King, who was chosen as the second team's designated player.
A dual threat for the Pacers, Flessate is currently 12-9 on the 2010 season in the circle in 25 appearances. She concluded the regular season with a 2.88 ERA. Her opposition hit just .241 against her during the regular season.
In the field, Flessate ended the regular season leading the Peach Belt Conference in fielding percentage with a perfect percentage of 1.000. The category is one of seven in which Flessate is in the top 11 in the Peach Belt Conference. Flessate is also 10th in ERA, ninth in batting average, eighth in innings pitched, 11th in strikeouts, 10th in wins and ninth in games started.
Flessate ended the regular season fanning a team-best 92 batters. At the dish, Flessate is hitting .240 with 20 RBIs. She is presently tied for the team lead in multiple RBI games with six.
The Goose Creek, S.C. native will leave USC Aiken in the top five in 10 different pitching categories including first in innings pitched and shutouts. The Stratford High School product is currently second in wins, strikeouts, opponents' batting average and complete games. Flessate finds herself third in appearances and games started, while being tied for fourth with one career save. She is fifth in career earned run average. She has also recorded 11 career home runs to sit tied for seventh in school history.
Locklear led the Pacers in the 2010 season at the dish with a .329 batting average. She ended the regular season with a team-high 24 RBIs and a team-best 27 runs scored. All this goes in addition to her team-leading 73 total bases.
Locklear is currently first in the Peach Belt Conference in total assists with 125. The category is one of six in which Locklear is in the top 15 in the Peach Belt Conference. She is also presently in the top 15 in batting average (10th), slugging percentage (14th), hits (11th), triples (fourth) and total bases (9th).
The Charleston, S.C. native has collected a team-best 15 extra-base knocks on the 2010 season, which includes a team-high tying five home runs. The Wando High School product is leading the team in doubles with eight.
Locklear has secured a team-high 14 multiple hit games in the 2010 season, which includes 10 two-hit outings. She has procured a team second-best five multiple RBI games. Locklear at one point during the season had a team-best eight-game hitting streak.
A freshman out of Chesterfield, S.C., King has developed into USC Aiken's everyday designated player in the 2010 season. King has made 37 appearances for the Pacers in 2010, making 28 starts.
King is hitting .344 with 14 runs scored and nine RBIs. She has plucked a total of 38 bases over the course of the year.
The Chesterfield High School product has six doubles on the 2010 season so far as well. She has produced five multiple hit games. King obtained a team third-best six-game hitting streak earlier in the season.
The trio and the rest of the USC Aiken softball team will enter the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament this weekend as the seventh seed.
The Pacers are slated to square off for the fifth time this season against the nationally-ranked and second-seeded Augusta State Jaguars in the first round at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 16 at Freedom Florence Recreation Complex in Florence, S.C.
The PBC Softball Tournament will be a double elimination style tournament and will begin with eight games on Friday, Apr. 16. The five semifinal games are scheduled for the next day, Saturday, Apr. 17 with the championship game slated for Sunday, Apr. 18.
The winner of the USC Aiken and Augusta State contest will go on to play the winner of the tournament host and No. 3 Francis Marion-No. 6 UNC Pembroke game later Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. The season will not be over for the losing team, however, as the loser of the USC Aiken-Augusta State game will go on to play the loser of the Francis Marion- UNC Pembroke game Friday evening at 6:30 p.m.
