Pacer Tennis Teams Battle at ITA Regionals
SUMTER, S.C. – The USC Aiken men’s and women’s tennis team traveled this past weekend to compete in the ITA Regional Tournament at the Palmetto Tennis Center. The event was hosted by Francis Marion.
Having played only one prior tournament this semester, the Pacers fought hard to progress through the draws.
An All-American in 2010, Greg Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Unigrade Valinhos) was the sole Pacer representative to make it through to the third round of the main draw; where he retired to Mikk Irdoja of Armstrong Atlantic State University. Andrade was 2-1 down in the third set when he made the decision to retire from the tournament due to reoccurring cramps.
Bruno Orlandini (Araraquara, SP, Brazil/E.E.B.A.) partnered Andrade in the A draw doubles where they successfully beat Mount Olive duo Alex Queiros and Diogo Sender in the first round, but then fell to AASU 8-1 in the second round.
Juan Manuel Guglielmeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina /Instituto Albert Einstein) and Freshman Lucas Cobbi (Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, Brazil /Colegio Politec) also both made it through the first round of the men’s A draw singles.
On the women’s side, three Pacers successfully made it through the first round of the A draw singles. Senior Stephanie Humphrey (Harpenden, England/Sir John Lawes) defeated seeded Tessa Rheault of Erskine College 6-3, 6-0. Doubles partner of Humphrey, Andrea Cediel (Miami, Fla./Cypress Bay High School) defeated Britton Bignon of Erskine College 7-5, 6-2 and Margot Simon (Nantes, France/St. Joseph de Loquidy) defeated Lyndsay Peagram of Lees-McRae College 6-1, 6-1.
The Pacers are now back in Aiken preparing for the Chick-Fil-A Collegiate Invitational, which will be held in Augusta, Ga. on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2.
