Pacer Tennis Opens Season With Home Sweep of Wingate

AIKEN, S.C. - The USC Aiken men's and women's tennis teams opened their 2010 spring campaigns emphatically on Wednesday with both winning their season opener at the USC Aiken Tennis Complex.

The 17th-ranked USC Aiken men's tennis team earned a 6-3 victory over Wingate, while the Pacer women opened the new season with a 5-4 victory over Wingate. Both the Pacer men and women are now 1-0.

The Pacer men took four of the six singles matches and two of the double matches to pick up the 6-3 win. The Pacers took the first three singles flights along with Juan Guglielmeti earning a win in the sixth singles spot.

The nationally-ranked Pacer men earned the overall win at doubles with the No. 2 and No. 3 Pacer doubles tandems taking victories.

The story was a little different for the Pacer women who were only able to procure one victory in doubles with Mathilde Grenet and Brittany Telford acquiring an easy 8-1 victory in No. 1 doubles over Wingate's No. 1 duo of Kara Stasikelis and Kelli Ferguson.

USC Aiken women's tennis team took three of the first four singles flights in straight sets and all four of the first four flights in total to claim the overall 5-4 victory.

The Pacer men will now hit the road for two matches in the upcoming weekend, beginning with a 4 p.m. exhibition match against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. The Pacer men will then square off against nationally-ranked Valdosta State at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

The Pacer women along with the Pacer men will then travel to Columbia, S.C. to face off against in-state foe Benedict at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11.
