Ponce Tabbed USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week
AIKEN, S.C. - University of South Carolina Aiken men's tennis player Juan Xavier Ponce was chosen as the USC Aiken Athletic Department Student-Athlete of the Week on March 1, 2010.
Ponce (Miami, Fla.) went a perfect 2-0 at No. 2 singles last week for the Pacers. He teamed with doubles partner Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) to go a perfect 2-0 last week at No. 1 doubles.
The sophomore transfer commenced his week in singles by downing Erskine's Caleb Barnes 6-2, 6-2 in USC Aiken's 8-1 team win over Erskine College on Feb. 26, 2010. Ponce followed that win up by acquiring a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Georgia College & State's Johan Wadstein in 17th-ranked USC Aiken's 6-3 team loss to 11th-ranked GCSU on Sunday, Feb. 28.
Ponce and Andrade picked up one of the biggest doubles wins of the year for the Pacers thus far by downing GCSU's 16th-ranked doubles duo of Jerome Leborgne and Joao Casagrande by a score of 9-8. Ponce and Andrade downed Erskine's tandem of Barnes and Angelo Ciarrocchi 8-4 at No. 1 doubles in USC Aiken's victory over the Flying Fleet of Erskine College.
The USC Aiken Student Athlete of the Week award is a newly created award for the 2009-10 athletic year. Each week the USC Aiken athletic department is going to honor one individual from an in-season sport for their hard work and effort.
