17th-Ranked Pacers Sweep Doubles En Route to 7-2 Victory Over Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The 17th-ranked USC Aiken men's tennis team swept doubles and never looked back in a dominating 7-2 victory over Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon at the Knapp Tennis Center.

USC Aiken is now 3-1 on the 2010 season, while Pfeiffer dropped to 1-1 on the year with the loss to the Pacers on Wednesday.

The Pacers No. 1 doubles team of Gregory Andrade and Juan Xavier Ponce played a tough match with the Falcons' top duo of Johan de Wit and Philip Lawson, but USC Aiken's top tandem emerged victorious with a 9-8 (7-3) victory.

In No. 2 doubles, Filipe Garcia and Juan Gulielmeti defeated Pfeiffer's Frank Pouchet and Andrea Cazzaro, 8-5, while USC Aiken's third doubles squad acquired an 8-6 win over Pfeiffer's No. 3 doubles team of Luis Villata and Sid Kaushik.

Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) lost the first set, 4-6, but he came back in sets two and three to earn the overall victory at No.1 singles over Cazzaro. Andrade took a 6-2 win in set two that was followed by a 6-0 win in the third set.

In No. 2 singles, Ponce (Miami, Fla.) defeated Lawson, 6-3, 6-0. The Pacers dropped the No. 3 singles match, but Garcia (Valinhos, Brazil) downed Kaushik (6-1, 6-4) at No. 4 singles. Gugliemeti (Mar del Plata, Argentina) won 9-8 (7-5) over Pfeiffer's Ryan Kerr at No. 6 singles.

On Saturday, Feb. 20, USC Aiken will travel to St. Augustine, Fla. to take on league rival Flagler at 11 a.m. The 17th-ranked Pacer men will be playing the 34th-ranked Flagler men, while the Pacer women will be dueling with women's No. 46 Flagler.

USC Aiken's week concludes on Sunday with an extremely tough double dip.

The USC Aiken men and women will open the day by taking on Peach Belt Conference foe and men's and women's national No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21.

The same day, USC Aiken will stay in Savannah to tangle with one of the top NAIA programs in men's and women's tennis. The NCAA Division II 17th-ranked USC Aiken men will be playing the NAIA 19th-ranked Savannah College of Art and Design, while the Pacer women will be taking the court against the NAIA No. 9 SCAD women. The action is scheduled to get underway at 3:30 p.m.
