Markiewicz and Pacers Continue Play at ITA Region Championships
SUMTER, S.C. - Nicolas Markiewicz and the USC Aiken men's and women's tennis teams continued play at the 2009 Wilson Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Region Championships on Saturday.
The region championships are hosted this year by Francis Marion and they are being held at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. The event continues through the championships on Monday.
Markiewicz (Liege, Belgium) defeated Evan Schreiner of CC by the score of 6-1, 6-0 to stay alive in the consolation section of the singles "A" flight. Markiewicz will take on AAS' Daniel Regan at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Pacer freshman Ben Klass (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) fell in his round of 32 match to Flagler's David Cotrone 6-2, 6-3. Teammate Gregory Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) fell 6-3, 6-2 to CSU's Frank Suarez in his second round match.
Filipe Garcia (Valinhos, Brazil) dropped a 6-1, 6-3 match to AAS' Paul Fitzgerald in his round of 32 match on Saturday.
In the women's "B" doubles flight, the Pacer tandem of Bridgette Gale (St. Augustine, Fla) and Melanie Schneider (Gensingen, Germany) advanced all the way to the quarterfinal round of the flight before falling to Flagler's Roxanne Alt and Deon Miller. Alt and Miller earned a 8-0 win over the Pacer duo to move to the semifinal round on Sunday.
In the "B" flight of women's singles, Gale fell in the round of 32 to COC's Lee Cantey (6-0, 6-4). Schneider fell 6-2, 6-3 to BC's Jamie Galasso. Courtney Hall (Watkinsville, Ga.) also dropped her round of 32 match by the score of 6-1, 6-1 to Victoria Lundquist.
The only Pacer still alive in the top flight of the women's side of things, USC Aiken's Mathilde Grenet (Doumont, France) fell 6-0, 6-0 to AAS's Sona Novakova in her round of 32 match.
