Eighth-Seeded Pacers to Tangle With Top-Seeded Lakers in PBC Tournament
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken men's soccer team will be the eighth seed in the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.
The league office released the schedule for the opening round of games late Saturday evening after the conclusion of the 2010 regular season.
The top eight teams in the conference standings advanced to postseason play with the first round of the tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 2. The higher seed will host the opening games with the four winning teams advancing to the semifinals and finals Friday, Nov. 5 and Sunday, Nov. 7, at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. The tournament is part of the PBC Fall Festival.
As the eighth seed the Pacers will square off against top seed and current national No. 6 Clayton State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at Laker Field in Morrow, Ga.
The Lakers earned a narrow 1-0 victory over USC Aiken in their meeting during the regular season at Laker Field. Clayton State netted the lone tally of the match in the 67th-minute off the boot of Arturo Cruz, who put in a Leighton Fredericks pass for the eventual game-winning goal. The goal was the fourth of the season for Cruz.
The Pacers concluded the regular season with an overall record of 2-10-2. USC Aiken ended its regular season with a 1-6-1 record in league action.
The sixth-ranked Lakers are 15-2 overall. They were 7-1 in PBC play during the regular season.
The four winning teams of Tuesday's games will come to Evans, Ga., for the final four, part of the first-ever PBC Fall Festival which brings the men's and women's soccer championships and the men' s and women's cross country championships to the same venue on the same weekend. The festival will also feature several community events such as a free soccer clinic for children and a 5k/1k Fun Run and Walk, the proceeds of which will go towards endangered middle school sports programs in Columbia County, Ga.
