Newby Leads USC Aiken to Second Straight Victory
LAURINBURG, N.C. - Freshman Scott Newby scored two goals to lead USC Aiken to its second straight win in a 4-0 non-conference victory over St. Andrews Presbyterian College at Knights Field.
The victory over the Knights improved USC Aiken to 6-10-1 on the 2009 season. St. Andrews fell to 4-11 on the year with the loss to the Pacers.
Senior Alex Lewis (Tampa, Fla./Shorecrest) and sophomore Chijioke Agbasi (Lagos, Nigeria/St. Gregory's College) both scored their first goals of the season in addition to Newby's two tallies.
USC Aiken goalkeeper Charles Andray (Grenada, W.I./Presentation Brothers College) only needed two saves for the victory while freshman reserve Devin Lemaire (Evans, Ga.) guarded the goal for the final 40 seconds of the match to complete the combined shutout.
The Pacers held a 16-10 shot advantage, while both teams took six corner kicks.
The two teams looked to be playing to a scoreless tie at halftime but Newby put the Pacers on the board first with 11 seconds left to play in the first stanza. Senior James Chidsey (Rome, Ga.) made a crossing pass from the right corner that was headed in by Newby.
Lewis notched his first of the year from his defensive position in the 56th-minute. Lewis took a long direct kick from near the Pacer bench that the St. Andrews goalkeeper was unable to punch away and snuck under the crossbar for a 2-0 USC Aiken advantage.
Newby (Leicestershire, England) tallied his second goal of the game and third of the year in the 68th minute. Sophomore Isaiah Cohn (McDonough, Ga./Luella) took a corner kick that was deflected by sophomore Amr Hailat (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken) at the top of the box over to Newby at the far post, who found the back of the net with his close range shot.
Agbasi completed the USC Aiken scoring in the 88th minute when senior John Lesko (Richlands, Wash./Richland) drilled a long kick from the Pacers box that was flicked by senior Fernando Gamez-Noriega (Sinaloa, Mexico/Colleton County) to Agbasi for the breakaway, who converted with a low shot inside the far post.
USC Aiken will close the curtains on its regular season next by playing host to nationally-ranked Anderson at the "Pacer Pit" at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29.
