Charles Chosen PBC Goalkeeper of the Week
AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Peach Belt Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon that University of South Carolina Aiken senior goalkeeper Andray Charles was chosen as the Peach Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.
Charles (Grenada, West Indies/Presentation Brother's College) picked up his first career shutout last week to help USC Aiken to a 1-0 Peach Belt Conference victory over North Georgia at the "Pacer Pit."
Charles made four saves on nine Saint shots en route to the clean sheet in the Pacers' first victory of the 2009 campaign.
The shutout against the Saints was one of two straight in which Charles has been a part. In USC Aiken's 7-0 domination of traditional South Atlantic Conference power Catawba yesterday (Monday) at the "Pacer Pit," Charles combined with Devin Lemaire (Evans, Ga./Greenbrier High School) between the pipes for the Pacers' second consecutive shutout win in just a three-day span.
Charles is the second Pacer to claim a weekly honor from the PBC. Teammate Troy Watson (Kingston, Jamaica/Montreat) was tabbed as the Peach Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week last week (Sept. 9).
Perfect in its first two games of an incredible four matches in seven days stretch, USC Aiken (2-2) hits the road next for a 4 p.m. game against in-state foe and regionally-ranked Limestone in Gaffney, S.C. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.
USC Aiken will finish its tough stretch with a 1 p.m. contest against Mars Hill in Mars Hill, N.C. on Saturday, Sept. 19. The Pacers and Lions will be tangling for the first time since USC Aiken took a 4-3 victory over the Lions to begin the 1999 season on Aug. 28, 1999.
