USC Aiken Set to Host 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate
AIKEN, S.C. – The nationally-ranked University of South Carolina Aiken golf team will play host to the 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Monday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 8 at the historic Palmetto Golf Club.
The home of Pacer golf, the Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 and it is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States.
The 14th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate will feature a 6,565-yard, par 70 setup at the Palmetto Golf Club. The first two rounds of the tournament will be played on Monday, March 7. The 54-hole tournament will conclude with a single round on Tuesday, March 8.
USC Aiken is the only Division II team in the field with some of the top programs in all of NCAA golf competing in this year's Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. In addition to the host Pacers this year's field includes Akron, Alabama, Chattanooga, Clemson, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Kentucky, Liberty, Maryland, Presbyterian, Wofford, Vanderbilt and Virginia.
Chattanooga carded a cumulative team score of 855 to earn the overall team victory in the 2010 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
Chattanooga has now claimed the victory in the event in two of the last three years as they also won the tournament with an 850 in the 2008 Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate.
The victory in the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate by Chattanooga means that since 2005 only host USC Aiken and Chattanooga have claimed team laurels in the event with the Pacers earning top team honors in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009.
Virginia's Ben Kohles followed up his tournament record-breaking 63 in the second round with a two-over-par 72 in the third round. Kohles' 205 total (70-63-72) helped him beat second-place finisher Robert Karlsson (208) by three strokes for individual medalist honors at the 13th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate. Karlsson was the individual champion in the event in 2009.
