USC Aiken Set to Play Host to Kiawah Island Invitational

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The University of South Carolina Aiken golf team will open its 2010-11 campaign by playing host to the Kiawah Island Invitational on Monday, Sept. 6 and Tuesday, Sept. 7.

The seventh annual, two-day Kiawah Island Invitational will be contested at the 6,875 yard, par 72 Cougar Point Golf Course. Designed by Gary Player, the course was rated at "4.5 stars" by Golf Digest.

The tournament will be a two-round, 36-hole event (18 each day). Action is slated to get underway at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 6.

USC Aiken has won the event three times before (2004, 2005 and 2008). Georgia College & State finished as team champions of the 2009 Kiawah Island Invitational with a total two-day team score of 571.

The win by GCSU marked its first ever Kiawah Island Invitational crown. The Bobcats are the third Peach Belt Conference school to claim the Kiawah Island Invitational team championship along with USC Aiken and Armstrong Atlantic State.

The 2010 Kiawah Island Invitational will feature 21 teams in total with eight Peach Belt Conference schools involved.

The USC Aiken golf team ended last year by finishing in the top 10 as a team in five tournaments over the course of the 2009-10 season. Ranked as high as 10th nationally, the Pacers closed out their year by finishing second at the Peach Belt Conference championship.
