Pacers Close Strongly to Finish Second at 2010 PBC Championship

PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The University of South Carolina Aiken golf team moved up two spots during Tuesday’s final round to conclude the 19th Annual Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship at the par 72, 7,057-yard Mountain View Golf Course at Calloway Gardens in second place.

USC Aiken had finished the first two rounds on Monday in a tie for fourth place. The Pacers posted a second straight team score of 293 in the third and final round to move up two spots to second with a total team cumulative score of 889 (303-293-293).

The score left the Pacers just eight strokes back of 2010 PBC Men’s Golf champion Georgia College & State, who finished the three-round tournament with a total team tally of 881 (294-294-293). The leader through the first two rounds, Armstrong Atlantic State stumbled to a 312 in the third and final round to finish third with an aggregate score of 894 (293-289-312).

Frederik Schulte (Koln, Germany/Herzogenaurach) led all Pacers in the event with a third place finish at the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship. Schulte at 219 finished just five strokes back of tournament champion Jordan Walor (214) of UNC Pembroke. Georgia College & State’s Niclas Johansson was in second place at 216.

Schulte finished the first round with a 73 that was quickly followed up by a strong 71 in the second round. He carded a 75 in the third and final round on Tuesday. 

The Pacers had three players finish in the top eight in the tournament with Kevin Grady (Woodbine, Md./Century) and Grant Carnie (Aberdeenshire, Scotland /Brevard) tying three others for eighth place with a total three-round tally of 224.

Recently dubbed an All-Conference selection, Grady shot a 74 in the first and third rounds that sandwiched in a 76 in round two. Carnie opened the event with a 75 in both the first and second round. He improved by one stroke on Tuesday with a 74 to finish with the 224.

The second place finish at the 2010 Peach Belt Conference Men’s Golf Championship was the Pacers’ top performance of the spring. It matched their best finish of the year, which was originally acquired at the Will Wilson Southeast Preview on Oct. 20, 2009.

The Pacers will now wait and see if they will obtain an at-large invitation to the NCAA Division II Southeast Super Regional that will be contested at the Wilson Country Club in Wilson, N.C. The event is hosted by Barton College and it will run May 3-5.
