USC Aiken Baseball Opens Fall Schedule

2011 Fall Schedule

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken Baseball team commences its 2011 fall schedule this week with two inter-squad games at Roberto Hernandez Stadium.

USC Aiken’s first fall inter-squad game will begin at 4:40 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 22 at the ‘Bert. One day later on Friday, Sept. 23, USC Aiken will begin things at 2:30 p.m.

The inter-squad scrimmages are part of a 2011 fall schedule that will see the Pacers hold 14 inter-squad scrimmages and three scrimmages against Junior College competition.

In total, the USC Aiken baseball team has 24 practice days available during the fall of 2011.

“Fall is an exciting time for everyone involved with our program,” noted USC Aiken Head Baseball Coach Kenny Thomas. “We spend most of the fall trying to get a general idea of our players as well as set a depth chart for when we return for our 2012 regular season in January. This is really important because when come back in January we really only have about three and a half weeks to get ready for the season.”

Thomas goes on to note that this year more than maybe any year in the past the quality of the players in the program is top-notch.

“We do not necessarily have more players this fall than in the past, but we do have a lot of quality players who will be competing for spots,” remarked Thomas. “Really the bottom line is that as coaches we have a lot of decisions to make this fall.”

The fall 2011 schedule also features an annual tradition for the USC Aiken Baseball program as the Pacers will hold their annual Scout Day on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The Scout Day is set to begin at 4:15 p.m. and currently around 15 to 20 scouts from a variety of Major League Baseball teams are scheduled to attend.

“Our Scout Day is really fun for our players,” mused Thomas. “For us as coaches though it gives us a chance to put our players in extreme pressure tank situations, allowing us to see how they respond.”

The 2011 Pacer baseball team finished its campaign with a record of 29-21. USC Aiken was 9-15 in Peach Belt Conference action in 2011.

USC Aiken’s 2012 schedule will commence with 13 straight home games at Roberto Hernandez Stadium as the Pacers will play all their games in February at home.

For the eighth straight year, USC Aiken will play its first three-game series of the year against Lincoln Memorial. The familiar foes will open their 2012 seasons with a 4 p.m. contest on Friday, Feb. 3. The three-game series between the Pacers and Railsplitters will end with single 1 p.m. games on Saturday, Feb. 4 and Sunday, Feb. 5. USC Aiken owns a 22-13 all-time series advantage over Lincoln Memorial.
