USC Aiken Dance Team Information

The USC Aiken Dance Team (founded in August 1995) is a 14-member squad whose main function is to promote university spirit and provide entertainment at all home basketball games, university events, and community events. The team performs hip-hop/funk style routines that feature technical dance skills. We also compete annually in the Universal Dance Association or National Dance Alliance National Collegiate Dance Team Competition (finishing 6th in 2011) and the Peach Belt Athletic Conference Dance Team Competition (Champions in 1996, 1997, 1998, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). In addition, we also host a summer spirit camp, host a cheerleader and dance team competition, attend summer camp, and judge local tryouts and competitions. We are affiliated with Burns Dance Studio of Aiken and our performance routines are choreographed by Corey Burns and Kristin Allen. We also attend summer camp sponsored by the Universal Dance Association and have had the opportunity for private classes with various touring choreographers as well.   The team has also been named USCA Best Student Organization on two occasions; once in 1996 and most recently in 2002.

Corey Burns is one of the most sought after dance teachers in the south.  His innovative teaching style and choreography have taken him all over the country.  In the past, he has performed in the Miss NC Pageant and has been assistant choreographer of the Miss Mississippi Pageant.  As choreographer of the USC Aiken Dance Team, he has led them to four conference championships and six appearances at UDA National Collegiate Dance Team Competition.  He also is a choreographer and participant in the annual Aiken Women’s Heart Board Play.  When not at the studio he can be found as an Assistant Principal at Saluda Primary School.  Corey spent four years on staff with Dance Olympus and IDC, a National Convention and Competition Circuit and also teaches Master classes throughout the US and Canada.  He is also Assistant Director of Burns Dance Studio.

Kristin Allen, past four-year USCA Dance Team member and faculty member at Burns Dance Studio is the Assistant Choreographer.  Her fresh ideas in hip-hop have produced award-winning performances for Burns Dance Studio at national conventions.  Kristin is in her eighth year as assistant choreographer and led the team to its first appearance in the Hip-Hop category at UDA Nationals in 2006.  In addition to her work with dance, Kristin is also advisor to the USCA Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta and works in the USCA Office of Admissions as a recruitment counselor.

The Dance Team is also under the direction of advisors Angie Osbon and Janet Joy.  Janet is employed full time at USCA and works in the purchasing department.  She has been with the program since it began in 1995.  She and her husband, Lucky, reside in North Augusta and she has one son, Stanton.  Angie is employed full time in the USCA Athletic Department where she serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Business and Student Athlete Services, Senior Woman Administrator, and Cheerleader/Dance Team Director.  She has also been with the program since 1995 and was a Pacer Cheerleader for 3 years as an undergraduate.
