USC Aiken Athletic Department Celebrating 50th Year

AIKEN, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Aiken is celebrating its 50^th year as an institution in the 2011-12 athletic year.

The USC Aiken Athletic Department is helping to celebrate the momentous occasion in a variety of ways.

One of the things done by the USC Aiken Athletic Department to celebrate the 50 years of USC Aiken athletics is by coming up with a special document that captures special moments from each of the 50 years.

The 50 Years of Pacer Athletics document was researched by the Athletic Department and it breaks down some of the most important moments in the history of USC Aiken athletics.

Along with the 50 Years of Pacer Athletics document, the USC Aiken Athletic Department is honoring its past, present and future by having its student-athletes wear special commemorative patches with USC Aiken’s 50^th Anniversary logo.

This week, a special Wall of Fame in the Convocation Center lobby was also unveiled. The Wall of Fame honors every student-athlete who has ever won an award while at USC Aiken. The Wall of Fame also honors all of the teams and coaches at USC Aiken who have received recognition from conference, region or national levels.

Randy Warrick, Athletic Director, has been at USC Aiken 33 of the 50 years.

He stated, “this is a very special time for our athletic department. We have had a lot of good players, coaches and administrators represent our teams and programs through the years. Our facilities are excellent and the interests in our programs have grown. If the next 50 years are as good for USCA as the first 50 years, Pacer Athletics will have many more exciting events, games and great student-athletes to come!”

The USC Aiken Athletic Department unveiled the commemorative patches and the 50 Years of Pacer Athletics document at USC Aiken’s Annual Athletic Media Day at Woodside Plantation in Aiken, S.C. on Thursday, Sept. 8.

The announcement comes just two days before USC Aiken holds a special 50^th Anniversary Kickoff Family Picnic on Saturday, Sept. 10. The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with a special ceremony to commemorate the day followed by a family picnic on the grounds. The event will be held at Banksia in downtown Aiken where USC Aiken first began on Sept. 10, 1961.

Throughout the course of the 2011-12 athletic year, the USC Aiken Athletic Department will continue to honor its past at athletic events and special occasions such as the 2012 Hall of Fame Induction on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012.
